Headway Highland - Supporting People Affected by Brain Injury

Headway Highland is a local charity set up to support people living with an acquired brain injury (ABI) and their carers/family members. We are affiliated to Headway, the brain Injury association.

Headway Highland's services;

- We run support groups in the following areas of the Highlands: Inverness, Nairn, Fort William, Oban, Alness, Thurso and Wick.

- We provide home visits following referral.

- We offer access to an acredited counselling service.

- We attend NHS Highland ABI out-patient clinics.

- We signpost to other organisations and services.

- We produce a quarterly newsletter.

The main focus of our support groups is on social activities and we provide these in warm, relaxed and friendly environments. We sometimes provide an educational element to our groups where we may discuss a topic related to brain injury, for example brain fatigue.  We sometimes invite guest speakers to deliver a talk/presentation to group members on a topic that is of interest to the group.

We regularly meet as a group in the same venue but will occasionally take part in activities at different locations.  For example, we may visit an a cycle ability centre, botanical gardens, cafes, go ten pin bowling, or on nature walks or meet up with another Headway Highland support group.

Headway Highland has developed a gardening project in partnership with the charity New Start Highland at their gardens by the Caledonian Canal in Inverness.

Regular feedback is taken from group members to identify what activities or events they would like to participate in.  All groups are facilitated by our charity manager, support worker or Volunteers.
